How to make pie chart in excel with percentages

Microsoft Excel is a powerful software for data analysis. The best part of this software is that we can present data in various types of diagrams for better visualization. In addition, diagrams and charts can help us to know about the behavior of data with minimum effort.

In this software, we can create various diagrams, and a pie chart is one of them. Pie-chart is a popular diagram for data presentation, and many students and researchers use it in their data analysis.

In this article, we are going to discuss how we can create a pie chart showing each portion in percentage using Desktop and Android versions of excel software.

Using Desktop

There are a few steps through which we can insert a pie-chart in the desktop version of excel software. In this article, we are going to create a pie-chart using the following data as an example.

Inserting the pie chart

First, select the Names of animals and their values, and go to Insert > Pie chart. We can insert different types of pie charts such as 2D, 3D, and doughnut. Select the one type as you like.

Now, you can see that the pie-chart has appeared.

Inserting values on the pie chart

To insert values on the portions of the pie chart, select it, and click on the ‘+’ icon.

Then, check on Data Labels.

Now, you can see the values are displayed on the pie chart.

Change values to percentages

We can change those values to percentages. To do that, just select the pie chart, and go to Design > Add Chart Element > Data labels > More Data Label option.

Then, you can see label options on the right side. Just check on the percentage and uncheck on the value.

Finally, the pie chart is completed with percentages on it.

You can also create a 3D pie chart from Insert > pie chart.

In this way, we can create a pie-chart in excel with percentages, but it does not show the precise value of percentages. The values are rounded and the decimal point is discarded. Here is another method that gives more accurate percentages.

Displaying precise percentage values

To display accurate percentages, we need to find the total value. For it, just select Animals Number. After that, go to AutoSum > Sum. The total value will display on the next row of the same column.

Now, to calculate percentages, type ‘=B3/61%’ on the first row of the percentage column. Here, ‘B3’ is selected because the number of elephants is in ‘B3’. After typing the formula just press the Enter button.

You can see that the exact value of the percentage has been calculated. To add the percentage symbol, go to the More Number Formats by changing the General option from the top menu.

Then, click on Custom.

Now, type '0.' in ‘Type:’ and type as much as ‘0’ as you want to display numbers after the decimal point. In my case. I type four ‘0’ (0000) because I want to show four-digit numbers after the decimal point. To add the percentage symbol type ‘\’ then, type ‘%’ and click ‘OK’.

The percentage value for the first has been calculated.

To generate the values of other animals click Green Point and drop it down holding the Left Button of the mouse.

Now, the percentages are generated of all animals. To insert a pie-chart, select animal names and percentages by using the Left Button of the mouse and holding Ctrl Button. Then, go to Insert.

Choose the Pie chart option.

You can see the pie chart is inserted. Now, click on the ‘+’ icon and check on Data Labels.

The pie chart will display more accurate percentage values.
